Senators Plan to Prevail Using Dynamic Players and Potent Chemistry

 by: Nathan Bragdon

Portsmouth West High School boys’ basketball team expect a successful season this year with dynamic players who can execute at any given time.  Senior captain Austin Opperman said, “I feel the team will be very successful this year.  We have many strong players that can perform very well.” However, good players do not guarantee a successful year. Success will be the result of skill, teamwork and dedication.

Second-year varsity coach Scott Davis had high praise for his players this year. “All of our players have developed really well and have good team chemistry together, said Davis. “Once we get in the swing of things to start the season, I feel it will be a fantastic season!”

In addition to Opperman, captains for this season are seniors Drew Howard, Cody Finley, and Patrick Bays.

The PWHS girl’s basketball players plan to focus on working together to meet this year's goals.  New varsity coach, Doug Williams, who has coached thirteen years prior to PWHS,  persuades his players to look beyond themselves and focus their attention on playing as a team in order to find success this season.  “Basketball can be measured in so many different ways when you start looking at individual stats. We try to get the girls to understand that your job may be different from game to game, depending on who we play,”   said Williams. ”We want them to understand the stats that we think are important and that can win us games.”

In addition, new junior varsity coach Drew DeLotell,  who has also coached before coming to PWHS, hopes that the girls find success through enjoyment of the game.  He said, “If you love basketball, basketball will love you back.”

Seniors Hannah Richards and Haleigh Pollard were chosen as this year's captains, and they, as well as the rest of the team, hope to work on their on-court communication  and pre-game preparation.
